Taxonomic Comments
A distinct species in a genus of about 25 species in North America and 1 in Japan. Texas species are either entirely glabrous or hirtellous as in Amsonia hirtella (treated as a synonym of A. palmeri by Kartesz (1999).

Found between 2,500 and 4,500 ft. elevation in the open or among shrubs, often along streams and washes, in sandy soil.
