Taxonomic CommentsEsslinger and Egan (1995) recognized two subspecies in Bryoria trichodes (ssp. americanum and trichodes). Esslinger (2016, 2018) recognizes three subspecies (ssp. trichodes, brodoana, and canadensis), elevates B. trichodes ssp. americanum (= B. americanum) to full species and separately recognizes B. ambigua (which had been subsumed in ssp. americanum by Esslinger and Egan 1995).
