Taxonomic Comments
Ackerfield et al. (2020) recognize Cirsium griseum described by Rydberg (as Carduus griseus), but include C. modestum and C. oreophilum as conspecific and propose that var. osterhoutii (recognized as C. clavatum var. osterhoutii by Keil's FNA (2006) treatment) be recognized as a variety of C. griseum.

Keil's FNA (2006) treatment does not address C. oreophilum, but includes C. griseum, C. modestum, and C. scapanolepis in C. clavatum var. americanum. Kartesz (1999) includes C. griseum in C. scapanolepis, C. oreophilum in C. scariosum, and accepts C. modestum as distinct. Kartesz (1994) accepts C. griseum, C. modestum, and C. oreophilum as distinct species.
