Cladonia turgida grows on mineral rich soils and humus from Canada to New England and south to West Virginia (Flenniken 1999). Also, this lichen species is circumboreal and occurs from Canada and Alaska and south to Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. It is also found in the Rocky Mountains (Thomson 1967).
