Concept ReferenceSzweykowski, J., K. Buczkowska, and I.J. Odrzykoski. 2005. Conocephalum salebrosum (Marchantiopsida, Conocephalaceae) - a new Holarctic liverwort species. Plant Systematics and Evolution 253:133-158.
Taxonomic CommentsThe Conocephalum conicum complex was studied by Szweykowski et al. (2005). The examination of live and herbaria material recognized a new species Conocephalum salebrosum which has a wider holarctic distribution and is the species present in North America (rather than C. conicum). Borovichev et al. (2009) further examined Russian material and concluded the same results, but noted the distinction is complicated. They determined the best diagnostic feature is the structure of pores of the archegoniophore, and on sterile plants - the structure of the dorsal thallus surface. Szweykowski et al (2005) also observed in live material that the texture of the dorsal thallus surface was distinctively shiny in C. conicum versus dull in C. salebrosum. Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) accept that Conocephalum salebrosum is the correct name for the commonly found species throughout North America.

Rank ReasonsThis species is holarctic in distribution and occurs in many countries in Europe, Russia (including Russian Far East), as well as occurs in many states in the United States and provinces in Canada.
Ecology & Habitat
Habitat
Conocephalum salebrosum occurs in moist, shaded and calcareous habitats. It grows frequently along streams, near springs, and bases of moist rocks and cliffs. This species of Concephalum is not as closely bound to wet places and is more tolerant to desiccation than C. conicum, as well as can occur in less shaded habitats.
