Rank Reasons
Eupatorium capillifolium occurs in the eastern United States, from Massachusetts south to Florida and west to Texas. It is estimated that there are over 700 occurrences rangewide. It occurs in old fields, open sites, roadsides, and flatwoods; where it is potentially threatened by development, road maintenance, invasive species, woody plant encroachment, and closure of canopy gaps due to the absence of fire. However, these threats are considered negligible given the broad range, large number of occurrences, and preference for soil disturbance exhibited by the species.
Range Extent Comments
Eupatorium capillifolium occurs in the eastern United States, from Massachusetts south to Florida and west to Texas (FNA 2006). Range extent was estimated to be over 1.8 million square kilometers, using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 700 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Eupatorium capillifolium is potentially threatened by development, road maintenance, invasive species, woody plant encroachment and closure of canopy gaps due to the absence of fire, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given species' broad range, large number of occurrences, preference for disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Eupatorium capillifolium occurs in "old fields, open sites, roadsides, [and] flatwoods" (FNA 2006). It is an excellent indicator of soil disturbance (Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024).

Ecology

This species occurs in disturbed sites and clearcuts, and is an excellent indicator of soil disturbance (Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024).
