Formerly treated as Chamaesyce fendleri var. chaetocalyx and var. triligulata (e.g., Kartesz, 1994 checklist); Kartesz (1999) recognizes as C. chaetocalyx var. chaetocalyx and C. chaetocalyx var. triligulata. The Flora of North America (vol. 12 2016) transfers C. chaetocalyx and its varieties to Euphorbia chaetocalyx.
