Taxonomic Comments
This record represents the narrow concept of Heuchera novomexicana not including H. soltisii and H. inconstans following Folk and Alexander (2015). Folk and Alexander (2015) note, "the treatment of Heuchera in FNA (vol. 8, 2009) refers to Organ Mountains populations of H. soltisii as an aberrant glabrous-petioled variant of H. novomexicana." Now that a greater amount of material has become available from the southwestern U.S.A., taxonomic reevaluations have revealed significant problems with the concept of H. novomexicana (Folk and Alexander 2015). "H. inconstans is distinguished from H. novomexicana by its green flowers, the frequent occurrence (up to one-third) of 6-merous flowers, and its specificity to sandstone" (Folk and Alexander 2015). FNA (vol. 8, 2009) spells the epithet as 'novamexicana', while Folk and Alexander (2015) spell it 'novomexicana'.
