Rank Reasons
Honckenya peploides is a perennial herb occurring on beaches, sandy flats, and dunes of Europe, Russia, Asia, and North America. This is a widespread species with over 3,000 occurrences rangewide, which are likely threatened by development, erosion, recreational activities, invasive species, and sea level rise. With a large range extent, high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, Honckenya peploides is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
The native range of Honckenya peploides is in Europe, Russia, Asia, and northern North America (POWO 2024). In North America, this species occurs from Oregon north to Alaska and the Northwest Territories, east to Newfoundland and Labrador and south to Maryland (FNA 2005). Its historical range also included Virginia and Delaware (Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024). Range extent was estimated to be over 71 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024). See individual entries for distribution details about the four subspecies (three in North America).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 3,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Honckenya peploides is likely threatened by development, erosion, recreational activities, invasive species, sea level rise, and other threats in some places, though there is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand scope and severity of threats for this species.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

In North America, Honckenya peploides occurs on sandy flats, beaches, and dunes above the high tide line (FNA 2005).
