Esslinger (2018) transfers Tuckermannopsis merrillii to Kaernefeltia merrillii; these represent the same concept for the element. Kaernefeltia merrillii of Nash et al. (2002).

Occurs in temperate/boreal areas of western North America from low altitudes to alpine areas and at intermedite altitudes in central Spain (Nash et al. 2002). Grows on bark or wood (Nash et al. 2002). In the greater Sonoran Desert region, it occurs in chaarral areas of southern California and Baja California (Nash et al. 2002).
