Taxonomic Comments
Sometimes has been considered conspecific with L. argentatus (AOU 1983). Treated as a distinct species by Sibley and Monroe (1990). Hybridizes with L. glaucescens in Kamchatka (AOU 1998).

BREEDS: northeastern Asia. WINTERS: Bering Sea south to southeastern Asia. Uncommon summer and rare fall visitor to western Alaska. Accidental in Hawaii.

Habitat

Mostly rocky sea coasts. Nests on cliffs and rocky islands, occasionally on flat sandy shores with scattered bushes (AOU 1983).
