This lichen occurs in the Northwest Territories south along the Coast and Rocky mountain ranges in the U.S. It also occurs from the Great Lakes region and Appalachians to Nova Scotia. This species likely extends into Mexico and Greenland, but distribution outside of North America is unknown.
