Taxonomic Comments
This record is for a broad treatment of Lepidium montanum which includes L. montanum var. heterophyllum as indistinct from the type, as recognized by Al-Shehbaz and Gaskin in FNA (2010, vol. 7), whereas Kartesz (1994, 1999) included var. heterophyllum as a variety of L. integrifolium. Al-Shehbaz and Gaskin (2010) do not distinguish any previously accepted varieties of L. montanum, saying, "The species is badly in need of thorough biosystematic and molecular studies to determine the number and range of infraspecific taxa...Without a painstaking study of this entire species complex, we prefer not to accept formally only a small fraction of its enormous variation. This does not mean that leaving the species as such is the ideal solution, and the listing of synonyms...is meant solely to guide the reader into the complexity involved."
