Taxonomic Comments
See Lachner and Jenkins (1971) for original description and information on phylogenetics based on morphology; see Maurakis et al. (1991) for a contrasting phylogeny of Nocomis based on reproductive-behavioral data. Morphological and reproductive-behavioral data indicate that the genus Nocomis is monophyletic (Maurakis et al. 1991).

Range Extent Comments
Atlantic Slope drainages from James River, Virginia, to Neuse River, North Carolina, largely above Fall Line; generally common (Page and Burr 1991).

This species is represented by a large number of subpopulations and locations.

Localized threats may exist, but on a range-wide scale no major threats are known.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Creeks and small to medium rivers that are of moderate gradient, warm, usually clear, and have gravelly to rocky sections. In swift water and pools. Spawns over gravel and stone mound nests made by male.

Reproduction

Gravel and stone mound nests are made from mid-May to June.
