Previously recognized (Egan 1987) as Bryoria abbreviata. See Brodo and Hawksworth, 1977 Monograph "Alectoria and allied genera in North America".

Range Extent Comments
North American endemic. Dry mountains of areas inland from Pacific Coast, but not found east of Rocky Mountains, nor into interior Canada. Appears to be found at elevations between 700 and 1400 meters.

On coniferous trees, Pinus and Pseudotsuga, in dry interior forests.
