Range Extent Comments
Roanoke (including Chowan), Tar, and Neuse river drainages, North Carolina and Virginia; extreme upper James River drainage, Virginia; New River drainage, West Virginia and Virginia; James and New river populations probably are recent introductions; abundant in Montane and Piedmont regions, less common on upper Coastal Plain (Page and Burr 1991, Lee et al. 1980).

This species is represented by a large number of subpopulations and locations.

Localized threats may exist, but on a range-wide scale no major threats are known.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Small to medium, generally clear rivers. Adults and larger juveniles in runs and riffles with gravel (cobble and pebble) and boulder substrates, smaller juveniles mainly in pools and raceways near riffles.

Reproduction

Spawns in spring, probably earlier in lowland streams than in upland ones (Kuehne and Barbour 1983). Lifespan 3+ years.
