Taxonomic Comments
As treated by Kartesz (1999 floristic synthesis), Polygonum persicaria includes not only the generally Eurasian P. persicaria, but also Polygonum fusiforme, apparently native in the southwestern United States, and P. puritanorum, apparently native in the northeastern U.S. and adjacent Canada; these latter two species are sometimes considered distinct, in which case P. persicaria may then be exotic-only in North America. FNA (vol. 5, 2005) transfers Polygonum persicaria to Persicaria maculosa.
