Pinus balfouriana is endemic to the high mountains of California. There are two disjunct subspecies, Pinus balfouriana ssp. balfouriana to the north in the Klamath Mountains and Pinus balfouriana ssp. austrina in the south, within the High Sierra Nevada.

The number of occurrences represented by herbarium records may underestimate the true number, as this species occurs in high elevations in undeveloped areas
Threat Impact Comments
Nearly all occurrences are on public land, Forest Service and National Park Lands.
