Plantago aristata occurs in North America, likely native in the eastern Great Plains and south-central United States, naturalized in much of the eastern United States, southeastern Canada, and California. Range extent is estimated to be 6.2 million square kilometers, and there are about 1400 or more occurrences rangewide. It occurs in the United States within many National Forests, and National, State and local parks, especially in Illinois, Missouri and Texas, but also in many other states

Plantago aristata occurs in North America, likely native in the eastern Great Plains and south-central United States, naturalized in much of the eastern United States, southeastern Canada (where it is not considered native), and California. Range extent is estimated to be 6.2 million square kilometers, using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023 (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2019, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, NatureServe 2023, SEINet 2023, Weakley and Southeastern Flora Team 2022).

By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, it is estimated that there are about 1400 or more occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, SEINet 2023).

Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Plantago aristata occurs in natural forests, woodlands, prairies, and around rock outcrops, but more often roadsides, pastures, sandy and other barren soils, other disturbed areas, especially dry, barren, exposed soil, such as, in the southeast clay soils denuded by bulldozing. It occurs at up to 700 meters elevation (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2019, NatureServe 2023, SEINet 2023, Weakley and Southeastern Flora Team 2022).
