Rank Reasons
Potentilla canadensis is a perennial forb occurring in dry, open areas such as lawns, pastures, roadsides, meadows, and woodland edges, and acidic soils of eastern North America from Ontario and Nova Scotia, Canada, south to Maine and Georgia west to Arkansas, and north to Missouri in the United States. There are over 600 occurrences of this species rangewide, which are threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, and succession. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent, a high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, Potentilla canadensis is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Potentilla canadensis occurs in eastern North America from Ontario and Nova Scotia, Canada, south to Maine and Georgia west to Arkansas, and north to Missouri in the United States (FNA 2014, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024). The range extent of Potentilla canadensis was estimated to be 1.9 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 600 occurrences (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Potentilla canadensis is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, succession, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Potentilla canadensis occurs on "dry flats and slopes in lawns, pastures, roadsides, cherty slopes, dry meadows, edges of oak and conifer woodlands, often on acidic soil" (FNA 2014).
