This lichen typically grows in association with mosses on a variety of substrates and occurs from Alaska to Newfoundland through the Northern Territories and from Alaska south to New Mexico and Oregon. This lichen also occurs in the New England region and likely extends to Greenland, although the potential distribution there is unknown.
