Taxonomic Comments
This is the record for Reynoutria japonica in a broad sense, which includes R. japonica var. japonica which is introduced in North America, as well as varieties endemic to Japan, variety hachidyoensis and variety uzenensis (treated as varieties of Fallopia japonica in FNA 2005, vol. 5). Schuster et al. (2011) find that the Polygoneae subclade Reynoutria is supported as a separate genus rather than as part of Fallopia, thus recognizing Fallopia japonica, as treated by FNA (2005), in Reynoutria. Reynoutria japonica var. japonica (F. japonica var. japonica sensu FNA) is equivalent to Polygonum cuspidatum (VASCAN 2019, FNA 2005).
