Taxonomic Comments
This record represents a very narrow-sense concept of Solidago canadensis, including only material treated by Kartesz (1994, 1999) as S. canadensis var. canadensis and S. canadensis var. hargeri. This concept excludes material treated by Kartesz (1999) as Solidago altissima (= Solidago canadensis var. scabra) and material he treats as Solidago canadensis var. gilvocanescens, which FNA (vol. 20, 2006) moves into their broader concept of S. altissima. This concept also excludes material treated by Semple et al. (1999) and FNA (vol. 20, 2006) as S. lepida. Finally, this concept excludes material treated by Kartesz (1994, 1999) as S. canadensis var. bartramiana, which FNA (vol. 20, 2006) considers to be a hybrid between S. canadensis and S. uliginosa rather than a legitimate variety of S. canadensis, and Semple (2023) treats as the species S. bartramiana.
