Species Fungorum (2018) here includes Cortinarius herpeticus in C. scaurus, while Phillips (1991) and Kroeger and Berch (2017) treat them as distinct. Species Fungorum (2025) transfers Cortinarius scaurus to Thaxterogaster scaurus; these represent the same concept for the element.
