Taxonomic CommentsThis concept of Zapus trinotatus does not include previously recognized subspecies Z. t. orarius, Z. t. eureka, Z. t. montanus and Z. t. trinotatus (in-part). Zapodinae was reevaluated by Malaney et al. (2017) and former Zapus trinotatus was split into Zapus montanus and Zapus trinotatus. Malaney et al. (2017) made a typographical error naming orarius instead of montanus as precedence based on Merriam 1897, and was corrected by American Society of Mammalogists’ Mammal Diversity Database (ASM 2025).
