Taxonomic CommentsThis treatment of Deinandra paniculata follows FNA (2006, vol. 21) which includes Deinandra [Hemizonia] increscens ssp. foliosa as indistinct, however, Baldwin and Strother state in that treatment that "Plants from the South Coast Ranges, previously treated as D. increscens subsp. foliosa, may warrant recognition as a distinct taxon."

Rank ReasonsDeinandra paniculata is an annual herb that occurs in Mexico and the United States from south-central coastal California south to northern Baja California. It has a moderately large range, hundreds of occurrences, broad habitat preferences, and tolerance of some disturbance. However, within its range, massive land use changes have occurred and continue to occur, so threats are ongoing.
Range Extent CommentsDeinandra paniculata occurs in Mexico and the United States from south-central coastal California south to northern Baja California. Range extent was estimated using herbarium specimen and photo-based observation data collected between 1992 and 2023 (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023). In California, it is documented in the following floristic provinces: Outer South Coast Ranges, South Coast, Western Transverse Ranges, Peninsular Ranges, and San Jacinto Ranges (Jepson Flora Project 2023).
Occurrences CommentsThere are over 300 occurrences estimated from herbarium records and photo-based observations with a 1 km separation distance applied to delineate unique occurrences (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, SEINet 2023).
Threat Impact CommentsThreats may include development, road construction and maintenance, and other land use changes and introgressive hybridization with other tarplants within its range.
