Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Disturbed areas with broken, stony, well-drained soil; found on slopes, washes, dry fans, and banks. Especially common along (mostly dry) streamways where they emerge from the lower foothills, and on bench lands built of rubble brought down by winter freshets. Grows scattered among shrubs or in groups to form small thickets. Associated species include Artemesia californica, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Salvia apiana, Rhamnus crocea, Opuntia engelmanni, and O. parryi. Found within Southern Oak Woodland, Coastal Sage Scrub, and Chaparral communities. 150 - 1700 m.
