Taxonomic Comments
Johnson and Cairns-Heath (2010) reestablish the epithet "linearifolia" with a new combination in Navarretia. Gilia linearifolia had not been recognized as a distinct taxon beyond its original publication in 1901. The name Gilia linearifolia has often been ommitted even as a synonym. (It is ommitted from Kartesz 1994, 1999, Cronquist 1984). Johnson and Cairns-Heath (2010) mention that Gilia linearifolia has been considered a synonym of Gilia capillaris by many workers, but also falls into some workers concept of Gilia sinestra. According to the Jepson Flora Project (2017), Navarretia linearifolia and Navarretia linearifolia ssp. linearifolia are synonyms of Navarretia sinistra ssp. sinistra in part, while Navarretia linearifolia ssp. pinnatisecta is equal to Gilia/Navarretia sinistra ssp. pinnatisecta.
