Argus in Douglas, et al., 1992 (B92DOU01AKUS) comments that "the pistils may be glabrous or tomentose. The latter condition is more common in British Columbia. The glabrescent phase of the species with glabrous pistils, glabrate leaves, and prominent stipules has been referred to as S. PIPERI Bebb."
