Taxonomic Comments

It is unclear how this species is treated in FNA (vol. 26, 2002). M. P. de Vos (1972) recognized five varieties; the plants naturalized in North America corresponding to var. australis. The comments note that material in North America is attributed to var. australis but FNA doesn't provide a description for the taxon or include it in the key. The varieties are not included in the synonymy.
