"This species is widespread, throughout the Pacific Northwest" (McCune and Geiser 1997). This lichen species is commonly found growing on smooth-bark trees in open woods and along roadsides. It occurs in southeastern Canada and eastern United States. In West Virginia it is widespread throughout the state (Flenniken 1999).
