Rank Reasons
Not only is Hypogymnia oceanica restricted in its range (from coastal Alaska to Washington and Oregon), it is also restricted by its habitat requirements (usually growing along the coast). While it is locally abundant in the Pacific Northwest, it is considered rare throughout most of its distribution.
Range Extent Comments
Hypogymnia oceanica's global range extends from coastal Alaska south to Washington and Oregon (Goward 1988).
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Hypogymnia oceanica inhabits highly oceanic hemiboreal areas. In the Pacific Northwest it occurs as an extensive colony which Goward (1988) comments is unusual for this species. Further, Goward (1988) says that it occurs "over the trunks and branches of Pinus contorta in an open, mossy, rather well-ventilated forest stands". Inland collections of this lichen report it growing in shaded areas under Tsuga heterophylla branches (Goward 1988).
