Taxonomic Comments
The treatment here follows work done by Ertter (1993) treating this taxon as a distinct species rather than a variety of H. bolanderi. Further, H. brevibracteata Wiggins known in Baja California, Mexico is lumped into H. clevelandii in the Ertter (1993) treatment, however, Ertter and Reveal (2007) treat 'brevibracteata' as a variety of 'clevelandii' in this later work.
