Taxonomic Comments
Kartesz (1994 checklist) excludes the widespread S. mexicana and S. rigida, which Turner (Phytologia 77: 344, 1994) includes here. LEM 24Feb95. Kartesz (1999 Synthesis) recognizes S. ajugoides, S. rigida, and S. mexicana as distinct, all three occuring in the U.S.; under this treatment, S. ajugoides occurs only in California; S. rigida occurs in Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada; and S. mexicana occurs in Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California.
