Rank Reasons
Allium monticola has been collected only from a limited area of the southern California mountains surrounding Los Angeles. It is unknown how many separate occurrences there are and how many are extant. It appears restricted to rocky and talus slopes along alpine ridges.
Range Extent Comments
Allium monticola is endemic to southwestern California in the Western Transverse Ranges, the San Gabriel Mountains, the San Bernardino Mountains, and the Peninsular Ranges (Hickman 1993). As of Feb. 2007, mappable specimens occur within a 2700 square mile area (Consortium of California Herbaria 2007), but there may be other occurrences outside this area.
