Taxonomic Comments
Following Kartesz (1994 checklist), here treated as one species, ranging from Louisiana to Nova Scotia. Sometimes treated as three species: L. aurea of the Southeast; L. americana of New Jersey and Delaware, and L. septentrionalis of Nova Scotia (see FNA, 5/98 review draft, for discussion). Family placement uncertain; sometimes placed in Liliaceae, sometimes in Haemodoraceae.

Wet, acid, often sandy soil of bogs, pocosins, low, wet areas in savannas and pine barrens, roadside ditches; 0-100 m (FNA 2002a).
