Taxonomic Comments
According to Weakley et al. (2024), "The various named varieties or subspecies need additional study; the variation seems to be too clinal to be practically recognized taxonomically." This treatment does not distinguish var. ambigens, var. austromontana, or var. intercedens from typical pedicularia; these varieties were recognized in Kartesz (1994, 1999).

Rank Reasons
Aureolaria pedicularia is a wide-ranging perennial herb that is hemiparasitic on oaks in woodlands, pine barrens, and open areas occurring in eastern North America from Ontario, Canada and Minnesota east to Maine, United States, south to Georgia and Tennessee. Threats include habitat alteration due to fire suppression, recreational activities, rights-of-way maintenance, deer browse, logging, and likely other threats in some places. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Aureolaria pedicularia occurs in eastern North America from Ontario, Canada and Minnesota east to Maine, United States, south to Georgia and Tennessee (FNA 2019). Range extent was estimated to be over 2.4 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 300 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, this species is threatened by habitat alteration due to fire suppression, recreational activities, rights-of-way maintenance, deer browse, logging, and likely other threats in some places (NatureServe 2024). There is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand the scope and severity of threats for this taxon. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
