Rank Reasons
Baccharis halimifolia is a wide ranging shrub occurring across much of the southeastern United States, and in southeastern Canada and Mexico. With a large range extent, over 4,000 occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, an expanding range, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Baccharis halimifolia is a wide ranging species in the southeastern Canada, eastern United States, West Indies, and Mexico, largely on the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain. It occurs from Nova Scotia south to Florida and west to Texas and Mexico (Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Veracruz). In the United States, its range has been expanding inland where it occurs over much of the southeastern United States (Weakley and Southeastern Flora Team 2023). It is introduced in Europe and Australia (FNA 2006). Range extent was estimated using herbarium specimens collected between 1992 and 2023 (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, it is estimated that there are over 4,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).
