Endemic to California, Clarkia australis is known from twenty-eight occurrences in Madera, Mariposa, and Tuolumne Counties. Fifteen of the twenty-eight occurrences comprise approximately 6,300 individuals. This species is threatened by logging, reforestation with herbicides, grazing, and road maintenance.
