Taxonomic CommentsStoughton et al. (2017) maintain a conservative taxonomic approach, recognizing the collective of southern California populations identified as C. lanceolata var. peirsonii, excluding those they treat as the separate species C. panamintensis, as a species with four subspecies. Thus, their treatment of C. peirsonii is narrower than the treatment of C. lanceolata var. peirsonii accepted in Kartesz (1994 and 1999).

Rank ReasonsClaytonia peirsonii is limited to the transmontane area of southern California, with perhaps 20 occurrences total, however, it is a confusing group, and may be under-collected, or not well understood, even in terms of distribution.
Range Extent CommentsClaytonia peirsonii is endemic to southern California in the Transverse Ranges (San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains) and the southern Sierra Nevada (Stoughton et al. 2017).
Occurrences CommentsThere are probably less than 20 occurrences, but may be under-collected and not well understood (A. Sims and R. Bittman, pers. comm., Aug. 20, 2019).
