Dry wooded slopes among rocks, rocky places, dry banks, steep talus, and summits within Red Fir Forest, Subalpine Coniferous Forest, Upper Montane Coniferous Forest, and Alpine Boulder and Rock Field communities. Var. demareei, which is endemic to Baja California, is also found on more gravelly or sandy soils. 1000 - 3800 m.
