Taxonomic Comments
Flora North America (vol. 26, 2002) here includes the concept of Platanthera leucostachys (= P. dilatata var. leucostachys) as a variety, while Kartesz (1994) treats it as distinct species.

Platanthera dilatata is a perennial orchid occurring in wetlands, tundra, and roadsides of North America, throughout all of Canada, and Alaska in the United States south to California, east to New Mexico, throughout the Great Lakes region and the northeastern United States. There are over two thousand estimated occurrences of this taxon rangewide, which are potentially threatened by development, water diversion, alteration of hydrology, erosion, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, deer browse, succession, and likely other threats in some places. Little is known about threats and trends, but with a large range extent, high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, and broad habitat preferences, Platanthera dilatata is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Platanthera dilatata occurs in North America, throughout all of Canada, and Alaska in the United States south to California, east to New Mexico, throughout the Great Lakes region and the northeastern United States (FNA 2002, NAOCC 2025). Range extent was estimated to be over 17 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1994 and 2025 (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, NatureServe 2025, RARECAT 2025, SEINet 2025). Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1994 and 2025, it is estimated that there are more than two thousand occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, NatureServe 2025, RARECAT 2025, SEINet 2025).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Platanthera dilatata is likely threatened by development, water diversion, alteration of hydrology, erosion, rights-of-way maintenance (including mowing and herbicide), invasive species, deer browse, succession, and likely other threats in some places.

Habitat

Platanthera dilatata occurs in wet meadows, marshes, fens, stream banks, shores, ditches, tundra, seeping slopes, and roadsides from 0-3700 m in elevation (FNA 2002).
