Rank Reasons
Pyrola asarifolia is a widespread perennial subshrub of dry to moist forests, swamps, bogs, riparian habitats, and open hillsides in subarctic and temperate biomes of Asia and subarctic and subalpine biomes of North America. There are over 5,000 occurrences of this species, which are likely threatened by development, water diversion, rights-of-way maintenance, alteration of hydrology, erosion, succession, recreational activities, invasive species, flooding, logging, and other threats in some places. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent, a high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, Pyrola asarifolia is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Pyrola asarifolia is a widespread species, found in subarctic and temperate biomes of Asia and subarctic and subalpine biomes of North America (FNA 2009, POWO 2024). In North America it occurs from Alaska and the Northwest Territories east to New Brunswick, Canada, and Maine south to Pennsylvania, west to Oregon and Washington, and all western states except Arizona. Range extent was estimated to be 63 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 5,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Pyrola asarifolia is likely threatened by development, water diversion, rights-of-way maintenance, alteration of hydrology, erosion, succession, recreational activities, invasive species, flooding, logging, and other threats in some places, though there is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand scope and severity of threats for this species.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

In North America, Pyrola asarifolia occurs in dry to moist forests, coniferous forests, swampy woods, bogs, riparian thickets, and dry and open hillsides (FNA 2009).
