Rank Reasons
Widespread in the western mountains and Black Hills regions and also occuring disjunct in the Great Lakes region and further east. Pterospora andromedea is found in mixed and coniferous forests (Hickman 1993). It is fairly common in the western mountains and only becomes rare in the northern and eastern portions of its range and in Texas (Kartesz 1988, Douglas et al. 1999, Higman and Penskar 1999).
Range Extent Comments
Western North America from British Columbia to Saskatchewan south to California and west Texas and disjunct in the east from from Ontario to Prince Edward Island south to Wisconsin and New Hampshire (historical) (Kartesz 1999). May also occur in Sonora.
Threat Impact Comments
Disturbance to its mycorrhizal association is a threat (Higman and Penskar 1999).
