Taxonomic Comments
This record is for the broad treatment of Pteridium aquilinum, including varieties champlainense, decompositum (endemic to Hawaii), latiusculum, pseudocaudatum, and pubescens, but excluding P. caudatum as a distinct species, as recognized in Kartesz (1994, 1999). Jacobs and Peck's treatment in FNA (1993, vol. 2) included P. caudatum as an additional variety of P. aquilinum and did not mention var. champlainense. Thomson et al. (2008) elevated var. latiusculum and var. pubescens to subspecies. Current treatments (e.g., Ackerfield (2022), Weakley et al. (2024), POWO (2024)) recognize the varieties as a distinct species (but including var. champlainense as indistinct from P. latiusculum), with P. aquilinum in a narrow sense not occurring in North America.

Pteridium aquilinum is a wide-ranging perennial fern that has been treated as a circumglobal species with many varieties or subspecies, though some treatments elevate subspecifics. It occurs throughout North America except extreme northern Canada. Threats include development, rights-of-way maintenance, recreational activities, succession, and invasive species. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.

Pteridium aquilinum has been treated as a circumglobal species with many varieties or subspecies, though some treatments elevate subspecifics (FNA 1993, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024). It occurs throughout North America except extreme northern Canada (FNA 1993). See individual entries for distribution details about the varieties.
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are thousands of occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, this species is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, recreational activities, succession, invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Pteridium aquilinum grows in dry to moist woods and open areas in partial to full sun, including barrens, heath balds, pastures, open pine or oak woodlands, and edges of deciduous woods in strongly acid to circumneutral soil (FNA 1993, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024).

Ecology

This species forms large colonies in exposed sites (FNA 1993).
