Taxonomic Comments
This record is for the broad treatment of Maianthemum racemosum, including M. amplexicaule as a variety, as recognized in LaFrankie's treatment in FNA (2002, vol. 26). Weakley et al. (2024) explain "The circumscription of this taxon has varied, from separate taxa at species, subspecies, or varietal rank in eastern vs. western North America, to recognizing a single polymorphic species. Recent evidence supports recognition of two taxa at species rank (Floden 2017b). A variety of chromosome races are known (2n = 36, 72, 144). The eastern M. racemosum is tetraploid; M. amplexicaule (Nuttall) W.A. Weber is diploid and more western."

Maianthemum racemosum is a wide-ranging perennial herb in forests and woodlands occurring throughout North America from across Canada, Alaska and the contiguous United States, and Mexico. Threats include development, logging, recreational activities, invasive species, and deer browsing. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and large number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Maianthemum racemosum occurs throughout North America throughout Canada (except Nunavut and Yukon), Alaska and the contiguous United States, and Mexico (FNA 2002). Range extent was estimated to be over 10 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024). By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are thousands of occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, this species is potentially threatened by development, logging, recreational activities, invasive species, deer browsing, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.

Habitat

Maianthemum racemosum grows in moist to dry forests and "deciduous woodlands, persisting along shaded roadsides and urban and suburban wooded tracts" (FNA 2002, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024).
