Taxonomic Comments
Amelanchier alnifolia treated here in a broad sense by Dorn (2001) and Campbell et al. in FNA (vol. 9, 2014), includes Amelanchier pumila (= A. alnifolia var. pumila) as a variety of A. alnifolia and includes A. alnifolia var. humptulipensis in A. alnifolia var. semiintegrifolia. While that treatment excludes A. humilis as a distinct species the authors say, "Disagreements about the boundary between A. alnifolia and A. humilis are evident in herbarium specimen annotations." Campbell and Burgess' treatment of Amelanchier in Abbott et al. (2017) includes A. humilis as a synonym of A. alnifolia, but lists a much narrower range than the FNA treatment.

Rank Reasons
Amelanchier alnifolia is a large shrub to small tree found widely in western North America. With a large range extent, more than 1,000 occurrences, abundant habitat, and broad habitat preferences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Amelanchier alnifolia is native to western North America, from Alaska south to California, east to the southern Rockies in New Mexico in the United States and Ontario, Canada. It is also planted as an ornamental and for it's fruit outside of its native range in eastern North America, northern Europe, and central Asia. Range extent was estimated to be 9.3 million square kilometers within its native range using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be more than 1,000 occurrences within its native range (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Amelanchier alnifolia is potentially threatened by development, road maintenance, invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Amelanchier alnifolia grows on stream banks and shores, lake shores, mountainsides, dry rocky and grassy slopes (northern shrub-steppe), hillsides, woods, thickets, shaded canyons, and roadsides (FNA 2014).
