Taxonomic Comments
Several varieties were recognized by Kartesz (1994) but these are all considered synonyms only by Kartesz (1999). While P. major subspecies intermedia (Gilibert) Lange has been documented in various locations in North America, in reference to infraspecific taxa of Plantago major L. in North America, Shipunov stated "Without detailed morphologic and genetic investigations of North American plants similar to the study of European plants by M. Morgan-Richards and K. Wolff (1999), it is not possible to draw any conclusions about the status and distribution of P. major subspecies intermedia (Gilibert) Lange, or any other possible infraspecific taxa of P. major in North America (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2019). Based on further work, it has been shown that "three of the most prevalent genotypes present in the native Eurasian range (of P. major subspecies major) gave rise to introduced populations in the Americas, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand" (Iwanycki Ahlstrand et al. 2022).

Rank Reasons
Plantago major is native to Eurasia. It is introduced, and occurs as an exotic, naturalized plant in North America, South America, southern Africa, southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Its native range extent was estimated to be about 40 million square kilometers, with a population of more than 1 million plants. Threat impacts to Plantago major are low.
Range Extent Comments
Plantago major is native to Eurasia. It is introduced, and occurs as an exotic, naturalized plant in North America, South America, southern Africa, southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2019, Iwanycki Ahlstrand et al. 2022, POWO 2023). Its native range extent was estimated to be about 40 million square kilometers, using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023 (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).
Occurrences Comments
Based on herbarium records, and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, and anecdotal evidence, there are over 5000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).
Threat Impact Comments
Threat impacts to Plantago major are low.
