Maianthemum stellatum is a wide-ranging perennial herb occurring throughout North America from across Canada and Alaska south to Virginia and Tennessee west to California in the United States, and disjunct in northern Mexico. Threats include invasive species, recreational activities, deer browsing, flooding, succession, and other threats in some places. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and large number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Maianthemum stellatum occurs throughout North America in all of Canada (except Nunavut) and Alaska south to Virginia and Tennessee west to California in the United States, and disjunct in northern Mexico (FNA 2002). Range extent was estimated to be over 15 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).

By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are thousands of occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, this species is threatened by invasive species, recreational activities, deer browsing, flooding, succession, and other threats in some places (NatureServe 2024). There is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand the scope and severity of threats for this taxon. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Description

Herb, perennial, with arching to erect stems 15-50 cm tall, arising from rhizomes. Leaves simple, 4-15 x 1-4 cm, sessile, lance-shaped tapering to a tip, alternate, arranged on either side of the stem. Flowers arranged in a raceme, terminal; sepals and petals alike, 6, white. Fruit a berry, greenish with black stripes; seeds 1-2.

Diagnostic Characteristics

Perennial herb with arching leafy stems from a forking rhizome. Leaves alternate , sessile, lanceolate with pointed tips. Inflorescence terminal, a raceme. Flowers white, tepals 6, spreading. Fruit a greenish black striped berry.

Habitat

Maianthemum stellatum grows in sand dunes, marginal woodlands, oak openings, alluvial forests, calcaerous fens, and seepage swamps (FNA 2002, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024).
